Mount Putuo

Compared with the three other Buddhist Mountains located in China, it is not so easy to get to Mount Putuo because it is located on an island in the East China Sea. But the difficulty in reaching this destination might also be seen as adding to its piousness for pilgrims as well as common tourists' expectations.

When it was first established during the Song Dynasty, more than 1,000 years ago, the Temple was called Bu Ken Qu Guanyin Temple, literally translated as 'Not-willing-to-leave Guanyin Temple'. In the centuries following, the temple underwent name changes several times. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi, during the Qing Dynasty, more than 200 years ago, it was reconstructed and dubbed the Pu Ji Chan Temple.

Mount Putuo has a humid climate and features various attractions for tourists throughout the four seasons. The lush landscape and location on the sea make it cool and beautiful in the summer. The autumn is the best time to watch the sunrise, enveloped with its clear and crisp climate. During the wintertime, it would be comfortable with its warm sunshine and gentle winds, with little ice and snow to be found. While in the spring, the time I'm experiencing this treasure, Mount Putuo is often intertwined with fog, which makes the mountain look more like a fairyland.

普陀山与山西五台山、四川峨眉山、安徽九华山并称为中国佛教四大名山，是观世音菩萨教化众生的道场。普陀山是舟山群岛1390个岛屿中的一个小岛，形似苍龙卧海，面积近13平方公里，与舟山群岛的沈家门隔海相望，素有'海天佛国'、'南海圣境'之称，是首批国家重点风景名胜区。普陀山是东海舟山群岛中的一个小岛，南北狭长，面积约12.5平方公里。岛上风光旖旎，洞幽岩奇，古刹琳宫，云雾缭绕。普陀山与九华山、峨嵋山、五台山合称中国佛教四大名山，而且又以山、水二美著称的名山，普陀山这座海山，充分显示着海和山的大自然之美，山海相连，显得更加秀丽雄伟。普陀山是全国最著名最灵异的观音道场，佛教圣地，其宗教活动可追溯于秦。至唐朝，海上丝绸之路的兴起，促进了普陀山观音道场的形成，并迅速成为汉传佛教中心，传至东南亚及日、韩等国。至清末，全山已形成3大寺、88禅院、128茅蓬，僧众数千。寺院无论大小，都供奉观音大士。可以说是'观音之乡'了。每逢农历二月十九、六月十九、九月十九分别是观音菩萨诞辰、出家、得道三大香会期，全山人山人海，寺院香烟缭绕，一派海天佛国景象。
