Description

Shanghai stands as the pivotal birthplace from which Yang Style Taijiquan spread across China and the whole world. Originating in Yongnian, Hebei Province, Yang Style Taijiquan was founded by Yang Luchan. After three generations of inheritance, Yang Chengfu brought this martial art to full maturity. In 1929, grandmaster Yang Chengfu settled in Shanghai. He revised and finalized the widely practised 85-form Large Frame of Yang Style Taijiquan here. In 1934, he published The Complete Book of Taijiquan: Theory and Application, establishing the standard framework of modern Yang Style Taijiquan through texts and photographs, laying the foundation for global Taiji practice today. Shanghai thus became a hub for the modern inheritance and international dissemination of Yang Style Taijiquan. Haipai culture and Taiji martial arts merged here, forming the distinctive cultural lineage of Shanghai Yang Style Taijiquan.

During his stay in Shanghai, Yang Chengfu taught numerous disciples, including Fu Zhongwen, one of his most outstanding inheritors. In 1944, Master Fu Zhongwen founded the Yongnian Taijiquan Society in Shanghai, with the motto “Diligence, Perseverance, Respect and Sincerity”. Committed to benefiting the public and strengthening both body and mind, he taught Taiji for free for decades. Taiji practice spread from factories and schools to urban parks. Successive inheritors preserve the authentic lineage, holding regular classes, performances and international exchanges. Shanghai Yang Style Taijiquan has travelled overseas and become a cultural ambassador of China. Listed as Shanghai’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, it maintains a complete inheritance system, offering public training, heritage exhibitions and Taiji study tours all year round.

Unlike intense combat sports, Yang Style Taijiquan is accessible to learners of all ages. Regular practice relieves stress, regulates blood circulation and improves posture, delivering benefits for self-defence, health preservation and mental calm. Walk through Shanghai’s city parks in early morning, and you will easily spot locals practising Taiji, a signature cultural scene of this metropolis. For visitors from home and abroad, immersive Taiji workshops, intangible cultural heritage study programmes, push-hand experience sessions and traditional form training are available. Travellers may learn basic postures from authentic inheritors, finding peace amid the bustling city and experiencing time-honoured oriental wisdom of motion and tranquility.
