Zongzi (Sticky Rice Dumplings), China's earliest "fast food", is steeped in the legend of the poet Qu Yuan. This experience transcends a mere cooking class-it is a profound dialogue with history.

Highlights

  • Learn to fold bamboo leaves into cones.
  • Fill the cones with glutinous rice and choose savory pork or sweet dates.
  • Master traditional cotton-thread tying methods (cross-tie, crisscross tie).
  • Discover the difference between savory southern and sweet northern zongzi.
  • Listen to Dragon Boat Race tales and take home a zongzi as a cultural token.

Description

We hope that orders can be placed at least 24 hours ahead of the cut-off time, so that we can have more time to prepare and ensure a pleasant experience for you. We will pick you up from the hotel and take you to a homestay, where you will attend a zongzi cooking class with a local chef. The class begins at 4 p. m.. During the class, you'll inhale the fresh, earthy aroma of bamboo leaves and learn how to roll them into perfect cones-the most challenging yet rewarding step. Then, you need to fill them with soaked glutinous rice, add large pieces of marinated pork belly or sweet red dates, and finally tie them firmly with cotton thread into a tight knot. North vs. South: Southern-style Zongzi has a savory and rich taste with meat, while northern-style Zongzi tends to be sweet with dates and red bean paste. When waiting for Zongzi to be cooked, you can listen to the tales of Dragon Boat Races, immersing yourself in the atmosphere of this traditional festival. You can take a zongzi made by yourself-it is not only a delicacy, but also a token of your connection to ancient Chinese culture. After the activity, we will drive you back to the hotel.
