Description
Step into Yuyuan Garden, one of Shanghai’s most representative classical Jiangnan gardens. Originally built during the Jiajing and Wanli periods of the Ming Dynasty, this garden has a history of more than 450 years. It was first created by Pan Yunduan, a Ming official, to provide a peaceful and pleasant place for his elderly father, which is how it got its name, “Yuyuan,” meaning “pleasing and comforting for the elders.”
Today, Yuyuan Garden is not only a historic garden, but also a cultural landmark that blends traditional architecture, artistic beauty, and the lively atmosphere of old Shanghai. As you enter Yuyuan Garden, you will immediately feel a sense of calm and elegance that is very different from the modern city outside.
The garden is filled with pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds, winding bridges, and long corridors, all arranged with great care. Every detail reflects the refined style of Jiangnan garden design—delicate, graceful, and poetic. Whether it is the layered rock formations or the beautifully carved buildings, the craftsmanship of ancient Chinese garden art can be seen everywhere. Walking through the garden feels like stepping back in time, offering a peaceful escape from the busy rhythm of the city.
Inside Yuyuan Garden, there are many highlights worth exploring, such as the Great Rockery, the Exquisite Jade Rock, Dianchun Hall, Sansui Hall, and the Huxinting Teahouse area. The Great Rockery is one of the oldest and most famous yellow-rock rockeries in southern China, impressive in scale and shape. The Exquisite Jade Rock is one of the three famous rocks of Jiangnan, known for its thinness, holes, and unique textured appearance. Dianchun Hall also holds historical significance, as it once served as an important site during the Small Swords Society uprising. These attractions give Yuyuan Garden not only beauty, but also a strong historical and cultural depth.
The area surrounding Yuyuan Garden is just as appealing. Connected to the Chenghuang Temple area and Yuyuan Bazaar, it is one of the most atmospheric parts of old Shanghai. Here, visitors can enjoy traditional architecture while also experiencing the lively energy of the city. The area is home to many local snacks and well-known restaurants, including xiaolongbao, tangyuan, and classic Shanghai cuisine. A visit to Yuyuan Garden during the day and a food stroll around Chenghuang Temple in the evening make for one of the most classic Shanghai itineraries.
