Description
Begin by meeting your instructor and learning about the history of gua sha, an ancient East Asian healing technique with roots dating back 2,000–5,000 years. Hear how it was formally documented in medical texts during the Ming Dynasty and gradually evolved from a traditional folk remedy used to treat fevers, pain, and stagnation. Learn how facial gua sha became associated with beauty practices and was notably popularized by Empress Dowager Cixi (1835–1908) of the Qing Dynasty. She was known to use facial massage techniques to maintain radiant, youthful skin by encouraging circulation and reducing facial tension. Discover how gua sha tools are made from a variety of materials, including bian stone, stainless steel, rose quartz, and jade. In this workshop, use jade tools, as they are generally gentler on the skin and lighter in weight, making them ideal for beginners and facial treatments. Begin by cleansing your face using makeup-removal wipes provided at the workshop. Next, stimulate the facial meridians by using gentle circular motions with the fingertips for approximately 10 seconds on key points of the face. This helps prepare the skin and activate circulation before using the gua sha tool. Choose from a selection of facial oils, moisturizers, and serums provided by the apothecary. These products help the gua sha glide smoothly across the skin while nourishing it. The instructor will demonstrate the different edges and curves of the gua sha board and explain how each section is used for different areas of the face. Once the chosen product has been applied to both the face and the tool, begin the gua sha massage. The instructor will guide the group step-by-step through each movement, offering individual guidance to ensure that everyone understands the techniques and can confidently repeat them at home. At the end of the session, briefly review both the facial meridians and the massage techniques to reinforce what you have learned. Finally, be introduced to simple lymphatic drainage techniques that support circulation and relaxation throughout the body.
