The original owner, Pan Yunduan, designed the garden as a peaceful retreat for his father, Pan En, investing over 20 years in its construction. In the late Ming period, Yu Garden was regarded as the most renowned garden in Southeast China, embodying the 'serene, delicate beauty' of southern gardens in the Ming and Qing dynasties. With its classic Jiangnan garden style, Yu Garden showcases the artistic style of the Ming and Qing southern gardens. The garden preserves a rich array of ancient trees, Ming and Qing furniture, calligraphy, paintings, clay sculptures, brick carvings, plaques, and couplets, encapsulating the essence of traditional Chinese cultural arts. The garden’s architecture and landscape design are intricately crafted, with features like the Grand Rockery and Jade Rock demonstrating the “small yet grand” aesthetic.
