Description

Meet your guide at the Shanghai Museum East Wing and head to the Bronze Gallery entrance after ticket check. Begin your 2-hour tour with a small group of no more than 15 people. Listen to your guide, an expert in Chinese art history, as they make complex topics like bronze ritual meanings and painting references easy to understand. Learn about the 500+ exhibits, spanning 3,600 years from the Xia dynasty to late Qing. See technology in action with X-ray CT scans showing ancient bronze casting and 3D animation of the lost-wax method. Discover the academic value of the gallery, organized by six stages of bronze history—Emergence (Xia), Flourishing (Shang & Zhou), Transformation (Qin & Han), and more. Admire key artifacts like the Da Ke Ding (Western Zhou), one of China’s “Three Treasures of Bronze,” with its 290-character inscription documenting early land reform. See ritual axes (Yue), ceremonial symbols of military or royal authority, and the Shang Yang Measuring Vessel (Warring States), with inscriptions proving the standardization of weights and measures during Shang Yang’s reforms. Marvel at the Zhong of Marquis Su of Jin (Western Zhou), a set of 16 bells with long inscriptions recording royal campaigns, and the Zi Zhong Jiang Pan (Spring and Autumn), an early mechanical marvel with movable birds and frogs, cast by the lost-wax method. Admire the Buffalo-Shaped Wine Vessel (Spring and Autumn), a ritual warming vessel in animal form, and the Shell Container (Yunnan style), decorated with miniature human and animal scenes, showing how rare seashells were used as currency. After the guided tour, continue exploring other galleries on your own.
